Literacy Skills and Graduate Work

I have recently graduated from the Master of Science in Education for Literacy program with a Pennsylvania Department of Education Reading Specialist Certification from Wilkes University.  Throughout my 30 credits of coursework based on the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, I gained the knowledge and skills necessary for teaching the five essential components of effective reading instruction which are imperative in developing successful readers.

Technology Skills

Using technology in the classroom allows me to experiment more in pedagogy and get instant feedback. Technology allows for more active learning. Activities such as online polling or asking quiz questions utilizing programs such as Pear Deck during online lectures gives instantaneous results.  It encourages collaboration with students in the same classroom, at the same school, or even with other classrooms around the world.  Use of digital learning tools in my classroom increases student engagement, helps improve my lesson plans, and facilitates personalized learning.  Lastly, it helps my students to build essential 21st-century skills.

The following list of digital tools are utilized often in my classroom.

Example of a student's oral presentation of their biography puppet project.  As a differentiated way to present their work, students were able to use Flipgrid.

To teach a lesson on theme for the first time, I created the above Google presentation and utilized Pear Deck as an interactive tool for students to engage throughout the lesson.
