Extracurricular Activities

Throughout my career, I have volunteered to be a part of several clubs and extracurricular activities.  I believe that students also learn by seeing their teachers involved in something other than teaching in the classroom. We can make quite a different impression on them and make those real world connections when we are involved in activities outside of the classroom.

Leader in Me Staff Lighthouse Team

We implemented the Leader in Me Program at our school back in 2016.  Our three day professional training we received in the Leader in Me Program was one of the most beneficial in-services I have ever attended as an educator.  As a result, I decided to volunteer to be a part of the staff lighthouse team in my building.  My role on this team was the Co-Coordinator of Leadership Events to help establish a leadership culture.  My position required planning and implementing of all school-wide events, classroom events, and family and community events.

Yearbook Club Advisor

As yearbook advisor, I provided direction for my student yearbook members assisting them in designing and producing our school yearbook.   I oversaw selecting and training students for their roles, providing guidance and encouragement, developing a style guide, theme, page designs, headlines, stories, and captions, photographing key school events, managing deadlines, completing final reviews, working with Lifetouch for publishing, and signing off before printing.  I also was in charge of finance management which included developing & implementing a plan for yearbook sales, tracking all sources of income, and promoting & Selling Yearbooks to the school population & parents.

Tutoring Facilitator

As the after and before school tutoring facilitator, I participated in the implementation of all necessary systems to support both ELA and Math program activities including record keeping and data collection of assessment results.  I compiled lists of referred students, assigned them to the proper tutor, created and sent home permission slips, flyers, and other forms of communication between myself, the tutor, and parents.

As an ELA tutor, I assisted students with grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing in a small group setting of less than 10 students. I used formative data from teachers as well as summative data to create and implement lessons for the specific needs of each individual student. monitoring student progress, identifying areas needing improvement, helping with understanding, and preparing students for classroom and state tests.

Curriculum Writer

I have volunteered to be a part of our curriculum writing team in both 5th and 6th grades for English Language Arts and Social Studies whenever a curriculum needed to be revisited or when we were adopting a new textbook series in the district.  I sat on a team responsible for creating and developing new materials of instruction and assessment.  Our responsibilities included:

School Newspaper Advisor

As the school's current newspaper advisor, I oversee the production, promotion, and distribution of the student newspaper. I strike a balance between overseeing work and allowing students the freedom to produce their own newspaper that accurately reflects the voices of our student body. Additionally, I aim to give solid advice regarding all aspects of a newspaper, from writing and editing to design and layout.
